Painted Night
oil on canvas mounted on panel,
24 x 36

This is my very first moonlight painting, and I'm still in wonderment about it - the idea for it simply bolted into my brain, out of the blue, one evening before sleep and then pestered me until I created a sketch and made preparations for the painting. The actual piece was one of those magical experiences in which the painting seemed to flow out of my brush.

The main horse in the image is an actual wild stallion living in the Pryor Mountain area of Montana; his markings and presence were compelling, and it was easy to picture him as the dominant presence in the picture.

I really, really like this piece.
